From April 2016, Barbara had some help from a kind, community-spirited solicitor called Jeff Thompson. He met Barbara at a function for lawyers; they got chatting, and he said he had a bit of spare time as he was completing his Master of Laws at University of Tasmania (UTAS). He’d owned a house in Hobart since 2010, but left it to sail around South-East Asia, and then from Rhode Island to Hobart from 2012 to 2014. An adventurous spirit with a very mild-mannered exterior: Jeff is someone my husband would call a ‘bleeding heart’. (My husband says that about me, too!) Jeff was not interested in a posh job in a fancy legal practice — and just as well, because as a non-Establishment graduate, he probably wouldn’t have got one. He put some pressure on the Justice Department after first being knocked back, but then got a job with the Department of Justice (DoJ) because he’d bought a house and settled his family in Hobart (showing evidence of becoming almost a Tasmanian). As well as that, he was more highly qualified, academically, than many of the staff at the DoJ. Jeff’s job was duty solicitor for the DoJ and part-time legal advisor at the Tenants’ Union, until, on 16 August 2017, he suddenly faced criminal charges of perverting the course of justice.
